Frequently Asked Questions

What is writing coaching?

Writing coaching is a combination of coaching with developmental and copy editing.

Say what??!

Our program combines motivational coaching with the following two kinds of writing editing:

  • Developmental editing, which focuses on what "the story" of your manuscript is and...

  • Copy editing, which focus on how that story is being told.

For example, a developmental edit might point out that your argument isn't strong because your thesis is not clear enough while a copy edit might highlight misuses of "effect" and "affect."

Who is writing coaching for?

Writing coaching is best suited for academics who need to get a lot of writing done. Example clients include grad students looking to finish a dissertation, tenure track professors looking to turn up their manuscript output to meet tenure expectations, ad scientific writers looking to finish their first book.

Currently, we are only accepting applications from those in the social sciences (e.g., psychology, social work, anthropology, etc.) though this may change in the future.

Why should I work with you and not someone else?

Great question! First off, I want to point out that I do not take on clients that I don't think I'll be a good fit for. There's no point in me taking someone's hard-earned money when I know they won't walk away happy. That would ruin my reputation!

Second, I think everyone who is interested in doing writing coaching with me should check my past publications to get a sense of who I am as a writer. That being said, I've worked with writers from a variety of backgrounds so don't be turned off if you don't see your specific research area pop up in my publication history. (However, I am clearly not a good fit for those in the hard/physical sciences.)

Third, you won't know if you should work with me or not if you don't try! Our first session is free and will include some time spent co-writing so that you can get a sample of what is to come.

Lastly, I was a trained psychotherapist for years and - while I am no longer practicing and writing coaching is NOT therapy - I think the therapeutic skills I learned are an apt fit for growing writers who want to write more clearly and get their ideas out into the world.
